Origin

The Black Spruce, also known as Picea mariana, is a majestic conifer that stands watch over Canadian forests from coast to coast. Reaching these trees in the boreal forest often requires a long journey, sometimes as far as the remote northern regions! This towering tree, which grows between 8 and 20 meters tall, thrives where few other species can survive. It favors damp, sandy, or peaty soils and spans the vast Canadian North, from the edge of the tundra in the Low Arctic to the northeastern United States.

Characteristics of the Black Spruce

  • Branches: Rough, with tightly packed, straight needles of grayish-green hue.
  • Bark: Shredded, reddish-brown when young, darkening as it matures.
  • Cones: Small and purple, turning light brown upon maturity.

Among the forty species of spruce, Black Spruce is the most resilient to extreme cold, withstanding temperatures as low as -60°C. Without the intervention of its greatest enemy, fire, this tree can live up to 280 years.

Explore the mysteries of the boreal forest and uncover the resilience and timeless beauty of the Black Spruce—a true sentinel of the northern lands.

History

The Black Spruce in First Nations Traditions

For millennia, First Nations communities have drawn upon the medicinal plants of the boreal forest for traditional remedies. Among them, the Black Spruce held a special place:

  • Cree Nation: Cones were used to prepare infusions with antidiarrheal properties. Needles and cones were also utilized as a remedy for diabetes. Resin-based balms were created to treat burns, and chewing the cones helped alleviate toothaches.
  • Montagnais (Innu) Nation: Infusions from Black Spruce were used to soothe sore throats and coughs. Children chewed the resin to maintain the whiteness of their teeth. The tree was also valued for its antiscorbutic properties. Black Spruce beer, popular at clergy gatherings, was consumed under the pretext of scurvy prevention.

In 1772, English physician Henry Taylor discovered a method to extract Black Spruce essence, which he recommended for treating respiratory ailments. Dr. Taylor also established the first distillery in Quebec City.

Explore how Black Spruce continues to influence both traditional and modern practices, celebrating a rich and timeless heritage.
