THE BOREAL FOREST, THE RIGHT LUNG OF OUR PLANET

The largest ecosystem on the planet

With its 270 million hectares, it stores carbon, purifies air and water and regulates the climate. It has cultural and economic importance for the people who live there.

  • The World Boreal Forest

Represents about 30% of the world's forest area, storing as much or more carbon than tropical forests. The boreal forest is the largest terrestrial ecosystem, home to thousands of wildlife species. This vast green expanse, visible from space, surrounds the northernmost tip of the planet.

  • Our place of activity

Canada's vast boreal forest, which covers more than 3 million km², represents nearly 60% of the national territory, stretching mainly from north to south. Most of this forested expanse remains intact, preserved from roads, urban agglomerations and human industries.

CONIFERS OF THE QUEBEC BOREAL FOREST

Adaptation to harsh climate

Conifers, such as Black Spruce, Jack Pine, Balsam Fir, White Spruce and Larch, dominate 75% of the boreal forest in Quebec. These trees are adapted to the region's harsh climate, with their conical shape that limits the accumulation of snow on the branches in winter, thus preventing them from breaking under the weight of the snow. Their narrow needles are protected from dry winds by a thick layer of wax. In addition to conifers, the boreal forest is home to a diversity of non-woody plants, such as blueberries and Labrador Tea.

OUR REGION

Eeyou Istchee Baie-James is a region of Quebec located in the boreal forest, near the 50th parallel north. This area is characterized by its thousands of lakes, its wild fauna and flora, as well as its majestic rivers. Synergy with Nature

BoreA SENS engages in synergy with nature and government regulations to preserve the ecosystem.

  • The Harsh Winters of the Boreal Region

This region is distinguished by its long, dry and cold winters, characterized by often very low temperatures and penetrating winds. The inhabitants, including the Jamesians, are familiar with the expression "y fait fret", meaning an intense cold capable of freezing the lips. This extreme climate influences the behaviors and gestures of the inhabitants, shaping a distinct culture and a unique way of life.

  • BoreA SENS and the Boreal Ecosystem

BoreA SENS works closely with nature, government regulations and other ecosystem stakeholders to maintain environmental harmony. Aware of the constant evolution of this living mosaic, they adapt to preserve the dynamics of their circular economy, thus contributing to the sustainability of the boreal region.
