The White Pine, one of the four native species of pine in Quebec, can reach impressive heights of up to 35 meters, although exceptional individuals of 90 meters have been recorded in the past, rivaling the tallest trees in the American West.

Its habitat extends from southern Quebec to Abitibi in the north, thriving particularly in sandy, humid or clayey soils, where it can live for more than 200 years.

Rapidly growing, the White Pine is shaped throughout its life by the prevailing winds, which gives it a unique asymmetrical look. When young, its bark is smooth and grayish-green in color, but it develops deep furrows over time, taking on a dark grayish-brown color.

Recognizable by their flexible and fine needles grouped in bundles of five, they measure between 6 and 13 cm long and persist on the tree for one to four years. Due to its thin bark making it vulnerable to fire, white pine is often associated with other tree species, such as spruce.

The elongated, slightly curved cones, measuring 8 to 20 cm long, do not produce seeds only after about 30 years of maturation. They appear in July, during the second growing season, and do not open until winter.

In the nineteenth century, European settlers opted for the White Pine because of its impressive size compared to other forest species. They used it extensively in building houses, boats, masts and even sailboats.

This intensive exploitation of natural white pine forests has considerably reduced their surface area by 2 to 3%.

So, White Pine played an essential role in the settlement of European settlers. However, for Native Americans, this tree had a symbol of peace, and its bundles of five hands were a symbol of unity. Beyond its symbolism, Native Americans also used the tree for its beneficial properties, notably against colds and for the treatment of wounds.
